Marine Pilotage Training Course

Training Course Objectives:

By the end of this Marine Pilotage training course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the Role and Responsibilities of a Marine Pilot: Gain a clear understanding of the legal, operational, and safety responsibilities of marine pilots during the navigation of vessels in confined or congested waters.
  • Develop Advanced Ship Handling Skills: Learn techniques for maneuvering large vessels in restricted waters, including docking, undocking, turning, and navigating through channels under various environmental conditions.
  • Enhance Knowledge of Local Navigational Conditions: Acquire detailed knowledge of local ports, waterways, tides, currents, depths, hazards, traffic patterns, and port regulations.
  • Improve Communication and Bridge Resource Management (BRM): Strengthen coordination between the pilot, the ship’s bridge team, and shore-based personnel through effective communication, teamwork, and situational awareness.
  • Apply International Rules and Best Practices: Study relevant IMO regulations, SOLAS requirements, and industry best practices related to pilotage services and safe navigation.
  • Use Navigational Aids and Technology Effectively: Develop proficiency in using radar, ECDIS, GPS, AIS, and other electronic and visual aids during pilotage operations.
  • Manage Emergency Situations During Pilotage: Learn how to identify and respond to pilotage-related emergencies, such as propulsion failure, steering malfunction, or sudden weather changes.
  • Understand Legal and Liability Aspects of Pilotage: Become familiar with the legal framework governing marine pilotage, including pilot immunity, liability, and reporting obligations.
  • Promote Environmental Protection and Incident Prevention: Emphasize the pilot’s role in minimizing risks to the environment through careful navigation and adherence to pollution prevention protocols.
  • Participate in Practical Simulations and Onboard Training: Apply theoretical knowledge in simulated environments or real shipboard pilotage operations to reinforce decision-making, navigation, and emergency response skills.
