Training Course Objectives:

By the end of this Maritime Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting and Fire Safety training course, delegates will be able to:

  • Understand the Fundamentals of Fire Science and Fire Behavior
    -Recognize how fires start, spread, and are classified onboard ships.
    -Understand the fire triangle/tetrahedron and the impact of ventilation, materials, and fuel sources.
  • Identify Common Fire Hazards on Ships
    -Learn to detect fire risks in different areas: engine rooms, galleys, cargo holds, accommodation areas, and electrical systems.
    -Promote good housekeeping and safe storage of flammable materials.
  • Apply Fire Prevention Strategies
    -Implement measures to reduce fire risk through inspection, maintenance, and operational procedures.
    -Follow proper procedures for hot work, fuel transfers, and use of flammable materials.
  • Operate Fixed and Portable Fire Fighting Equipment
    -Gain practical knowledge in using fire extinguishers, hoses, fire pumps, hydrants, foam systems, and CO₂ suppression systems.
    -Learn the correct use, maintenance, and limitations of each equipment type.
  • Respond Effectively to Fire Emergencies
    -Practice shipboard firefighting techniques, including boundary cooling, ventilation control, and search-and-rescue.
    -Develop decision-making skills under pressure and within confined maritime environments.
  • Understand Fire Detection and Alarm Systems
    -Identify types of fire detection systems used onboard and their correct operation and maintenance.
    -Recognize alarm signals and appropriate crew responses.
  • Develop Teamwork and Firefighting Leadership Skills
    -Coordinate firefighting teams according to shipboard procedures.
    -Communicate clearly during emergency situations using standard marine communication protocols.
  • Enhance Personal Safety and Use of Protective Equipment
    -Practice safe donning and use of fireman’s outfit, breathing apparatus (SCBA), and thermal protective gear.
    -Understand the importance of fitness, visibility, and endurance in fire response.
  • Follow International Regulations and Safety Procedures
    -Align with STCW Code (Section A-VI/1-2) and SOLAS requirements for fire safety training.
    -Understand the content and use of the Fire Control Plan and onboard safety manuals.
  • Conduct Fire Drills and Safety Inspections
    -Plan, execute, and evaluate regular fire drills as part of emergency preparedness.
    -Learn inspection techniques to ensure fire doors, dampers, alarms, and extinguishers are functional.
