Training Course Objectives:
By the end of this Port Traffic Control Systems & Procedures and GMDSS training course, delegates will be able to:
- Understand the role and importance of Port Traffic Control (PTC) systems in ensuring safe, secure, and efficient vessel movements within port areas.
- Familiarize with the structure and operation of Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) and their compliance with IMO and IALA standards.
- Apply standard procedures for vessel monitoring, navigation assistance, and traffic organization within controlled port waters.
- Enhance decision-making skills in traffic conflict resolution, emergency situations, and congestion management.
- Understand the principles and functionality of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and its relevance to port communication.
- Operate and manage GMDSS equipment, including VHF, MF/HF radios, NAVTEX, EPIRBs, and INMARSAT systems.
- Ensure effective communication between ships and port authorities, following internationally accepted protocols and procedures.
- Interpret maritime distress, urgency, and safety signals and coordinate appropriate responses with relevant authorities.
- Integrate GMDSS with port security and emergency response plans, ensuring a coordinated response to incidents.
- Monitor and report on vessel movements, berthing schedules, and compliance with port regulations.
- Use electronic chart systems (ECDIS), radar, and AIS to support real-time port traffic surveillance.
- Enhance coordination among port control, pilots, tug services, and terminal operators to improve operational efficiency and safety.
